: Decaf coffee beans are the same freshly roasted coffee beans that our customers know and love, but without the caffeine. Coffee naturally has high amounts of caffeine in and during the roasting process we see that caffeine either increases or decreases. There is a common misconception within coffee that darker roasted coffee has more caffeine. However, this is not the case. The roasting process actually roasts away some of that caffeine which means a lighter roast bean usually contains more caffeine. At Presto, we roast most of our beans to a medium/dark level which gives the bean a great full rounded flavour. The decaffeination process just removes most of the caffeine leaving a beautiful coffee bean that is caffeine-free! The Presto Decaffeination Process takes place in food manufacturing facilities. The process at Presto involves the following steps.

Submersing the green coffee beans in water for a prolonged period of time so that the beans themselves become more permeable.
Extracting the caffeine from the beans. This is done with water, a solvent or activated carbon.
Drying the decaffeinated coffee beans back to their normal moisture level. This is a critical step for the coffee as it will affect the roasting time and temperature.

: Caffeine is a natural stimulant, which can be found in plant-based foods and drinks, like coffee, tea, chocolate, cola and guarana. Caffeine typically boosts our alertness and energy levels, though it affects everyone differently, with some people being very sensitive to it, whilst others notice very few effects. Caffeine in its raw form is a white powder that is bitter to taste, the chemical name is 1,3,7 trimethylxanthine. It typically takes about 45 minutes to be absorbed into the bloodstream, but it is possible to notice the effects after 15 minutes. Caffeine from drinks is quickly absorbed, whereas it takes longer to absorb when it’s in solid foods. That means drinking your morning espresso will offer a little bit more of a kick than a chocolatey snack.

: Robusta coffee beans have on average 83% more caffeine than arabica beans, so making coffee with these beans will produce a significantly more potent cup with a lot more caffeine! For example, a robusta espresso could contain 120mg, and a mug of robusta filter could be 200mg of caffeine. : At Presto Coffee we have been looking at the Swiss Water Process which relies on caffeine solubility (dissolvability) and osmosis to remove caffeine from green coffee beans. At the moment we do not have the infrastructure to use the swiss water process on our beans. To begin the decaffeinated process, green coffee beans are soaked in hot water to dissolve the caffeine.
