How to Make Whipped Coffee

The humble whipped coffee took the internet by storm.  Tik Tok, Instagram, Facebook, every social media channel was full of everybody’s newfound love for this delicious coffee delicacy.

We of course had to have a play around with it to see what all the fuss was about.  To be fair, we were very impressed!  It’s quick, easy, and tastes amazing.

Rich and velvety smooth, a whipped coffee is a wonderfully indulgent drink that is certain to hit the sweet spot for any coffee lover.

What is Whipped Coffee?

While it may seem like an odd drink we’re big fans of trying something new with coffee, which is exactly what a whipped coffee does.

It’s a staple in South Korea, which is where the social media trend started.  Greece also has its own similar version called a Frappe Coffee.

Both versions work from a simple base of instant coffee, sugar, and water - it’s that easy to make!

What You’ll Need

We highly recommend using an electric food mixer, either freestanding or handheld, to combine the ingredients as it really does make your life a lot easier.

You can whisk by hand but this does require some (a lot!) elbow grease.

It is also worth noting that you do need to use instant coffee for whipped coffee. While you may think it’ll taste nicer with ground coffee, instant coffee is needed as it dissolves best in water. Ground coffee, even with a great grinder, will not be fine enough to dissolve and get the necessary consistency.

How to Make Whipped Coffee

So let’s dive straight in.

Ingredients

When it comes to quantity the only rule is to use equal quantities of coffee, sugar, and hot water.  Generally, for 1 cup we like to use 1tbsp of each.

  •       Instant coffee
  •         Sugar
  •         Hot Water
  •         100-200ml of milk

Method

  1.       Mix the instant coffee, sugar, and hot water together in a medium-size mixing bowl. Make sure the water is hot but not boiling, preferably just off the boil.
  2.       Whisk ingredients together for 1-2 minutes, until the texture starts to thicken. The mixture initially looks like instant coffee but will eventually get thicker the longer you whisk.
  3.       After several minutes of whisking, the coffee should take on a thicker, creamier consistency. The colour should turn lighter too, going from a traditional dark instant coffee colour to a lighter tone.
  4.       Continue whisking until the mixture thickens and turns a lighter colour. You want it to be thick and creamy, with a texture like whipped cream or peanut butter.
  5.       Test the thickness by seeing if the mixture forms peaks as its whisked - it should be thick enough to hold the shape.
  6.       Fill a glass with the milk and spoon the whipped coffee on top. Traditional whipped coffee is served on top of ice and milk, making it a great way to cool down on those hotter days.
  7.       You can stir together or let the ingredients naturally blend over time, either way, the drink tastes amazing!

What about variations?

We’re sure there are many questions running through your head – can you make it vegan? do you have to use sugar?  Does the milk have to be cold?

Let’s dig into these…

Vegan whipped coffee

The best thing about whipped coffee is that a vegan recipe is just as easy to make! Simply follow the exact same recipe above, swapping out the milk at the end with your preferred non-dairy alternative. Yummy!

Sugar

We’ll be honest, the sugar isn’t essential but it does make a big difference not only to the taste but also to the consistency of the whipped coffee.

We’ve found that without the sugar it doesn’t quite hold its shape as well as it does with the sugar.

If you want to avoid using refined sugar you can use alternatives you’ll be glad to know.  The one thing you want to make sure of is that you use a granulated sugar alternative not a liquid sugar alternative.

Cold or hot milk?

The simple answer is, you can use either.  It totally depends on what mood you are in!

Final Thoughts

Sometimes internet sensations are a bit of a let-down.  Whipped coffee on the other hand is an absolute delight and we have no idea you’ll love every second of making and drinking it.
